In today’s world, it’s so easy to get distracted or fall victim to “shiny object syndrome”, but having a strong, personalized mission statement can be priceless when it comes to success to your online business.

A mission statement creates the framework for creativity and success by defining WHAT you do and WHY you do it.  If you’re trying to get clarity on what you should create for your audience, one of the best things you can do is to write your mission statement in a way that puts them at the center.

I can’t reference this topic without thinking of one of my favorite books “Start with Why” by Simon Sinek.  Finding your “Why” is one of the most important and productive things you can do for both your personal and professional lives.

Your “Why” makes it easier to stay motivated and keep going by reminding you what matters most. Anything outside of your mission statement is something that can be put on the back burner for another time or be discarded completely. If you’re wondering how to write your mission statement, let’s start by answering these 4 questions.

4 questions to define your mission statement:

  • Who do you Serve?

  • What problem do they have?

  • How do you solve it?

  • Why is this valuable to them?

By describing your “Why” it makes it easier to keep going when you encounter setbacks or when you run out of creative ideas.  Coming back to this mission statement helps you to get clarity on what you should do next to get closer to your desired destination. Mission statements give you a milestone to strive for and help you to make better decisions along the way.

By having this destination in mind it makes it easier to plan out how will get there, expectations that need to be met, and what roadblocks or distractions to avoid. If something doesn’t align with your mission statement, it's best for you to pocket it for later or cast it aside completely. And finally, a strong mission statement helps you to create a stronger brand.  When you know why you do, what you do, and consistently deliver that value to those you serve time and time again, word-of-mouth about you and the value you provide will spread… AND FAST!

This will help you to become the go-to source for that service.   I love what Hubspot has to say about this:

“For modern businesses, strong brand recall requires you to nail your purpose and promise down to the specific emotions you want your customers and employees to feel when they think of you.” - Hubspot

You should be able to summarize your mission into an elevator pitch that takes about 30 seconds or less to share with someone, all while simply getting the point across.

Mission statements are to be kept close to the vest and easy to access. When first crafting it, it’s a good idea to spend a good amount of time to brainstorm, but also give yourself some space to add in new ideas to come back to later.

Create a  habit of regularly reviewing your mission statement with your team. This helps to make sure you are on target and puts a spotlight on areas where you may need to make a change in order to reach your goals. To help make writing your mission statement easier, we have created a downloadable mission statement worksheet with step-by-step instructions.

We recommend printing this out and handwriting it the first time, or a few times. We’ve found that physically writing it out helps to get the creative juices flowing and really brings your mission statement to life.

If you have a mission statement or questions on how to dial yours in, leave it in the comment section below and we’ll be glad to help you out. Enjoy!
